XE.XE..@DD+ B&DEE0E:BfJJLDJD.~E~EEJ| : INTERNATIONAL AND FOREIGN LEGAL RESEARCH Spring 2011 Tom Kimbrough Student Presentations & Summaries of Legal Research Guides Give a twenty minute or shorter presentation on your legal research guide topic during an assigned time between March 29 April 19. The presentation and summary will count (together with meeting deadlines), collectively, for 15% of your final grade. Provide each of your classmates with a one-page summary at the beginning of class on the day of your presentation; Presentation A sign-up sheet will be provided in due course for assigning time slots for the student presentations. Each student will give a maximum twenty minute presentation on his or her legal research guide topic. You must decide how best to use your time. We are all eager to learn something about each topic! The format of your presentation (e.g., straight lecture, power-point, use of Internet, etc.) is your choice. If using visuals, each student should put her/his presentation on a flash drive so that all presentations can be given on the same computer supplied by the professor; it is the students obligation to practice with the flash drive in order to ensure that the students presentation will run smoothly. Some things to mention during your presentation might include: why this area of law interests you, organizations that specialize in this area of law, or recent developments in this area. While the format of the research guide itself is very structured, the presentation is not structured. Feel free to be creative and talk about whatever aspect of your research guide you wish. Questions after the Presentation There will be time for questions after your presentation. You need to have acquired thorough knowledge of your research guide topic so that you can confidently field questions about it. Your ability to answer questions effectively can boost your grade on the presentation. Legal Research Guide Summary The purpose of the summary is so that each of the students will have a description of your research guide topic in front of them as they observe your presentation. If you send me your one-page summary by e-mail before the relevant class session, then I will make sufficient copies of your summary for all of the students and distribute them on the day of your presentation. At a minimum please include the following information on your one page summary sheet: A brief overview of the scope and jurisdiction of your topic as well as your guiding hypothetical fact scenario. Suggestions on a few basic sources for background information; where would you start? Identification of at least two of your favorite resources for your topic (resources may be any media). Advice as to problems or issues or resources peculiar to your topic things that you discovered that you would have liked to have known about when you began your project. With the exception of item 4 above, the summary sheet text will be excerpted from your guide. In other words, preparing the summary should not take a significant amount of your time as you already will have done nearly all of the relevant work on this in the course of creating your research guide.
