Since taking the bench in January 2024, Judge Micah W. J. Smith has brought a deep, multifaceted perspective to the U.S. District Court for the District of Hawai’i—shaped by years at the intersection of trial work, appellate strategy, and public service. Before his appointment, he served in senior leadership roles in the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Hawai’i, including deputy chief of the Criminal Division and chief of appeals and legal strategy, after previously serving as an assistant U.S. attorney in the Southern District of New York.
Judge Smith’s career also spans private practice at O’Melveny & Myers in Washington, DC, and prestigious clerkships with Justice David H. Souter on the U.S. Supreme Court and Judge Guido Calabresi on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit. He earned his JD, magna cum laude, from Harvard Law School and his BA, summa cum laude, from Lock Haven University of Pennsylvania.
