Law, Not Force: Ben Ferencz鈥檚 Legacy of Legal Justice for Human Rights Victims
On December 12, 2024, the FCIL held a webinar honoring Ben Ferencz, a Nuremberg trial prosecutor who played a crucial role in the establishment of a permanent International Criminal Court. Ferencz鈥檚 family fled pogroms in Europe for New York when Ferencz was still a baby. 27 years later, fresh from law school and having never tried a case, Ferencz returned to Europe and successfully convicted 22 members of the Einsatzgruppen death squads for the murders of over a million Jewish and Romani men, women, and children. The experience inspired Ferencz to tirelessly advocate for legal justice for human rights victims until his death last year at 103. This program discussed Ferencz鈥檚 lifelong campaign to fight human rights violations through the rule of law and the contemporary human rights tribunals that continue his legacy.
The webinar featured speakers John M. Geiringer (Partner and Regulatory Section Leader, BFKN law firm) and Adam Weber (Associate Dean of International Programs, Associate Teaching Professor, Chicago-Kent College of Law). Geiringer, a practicing attorney, teaches banking law, national security law, and Holocaust and the Law at Chicago-Kent College of Law, where he is a founding Co-Director of its Center for National Security and Human Rights Law (and its Consortium for the Research and Study of Holocaust and the Law). Before joining academia, Weber served as Trial Attorney at the Office of the Prosecutor for the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia, where he obtained convictions against high-level officials responsible for the Bosnian genocide. The webinar was developed by FCIL-SIS members Eugene M. Giudice (Senior Research Services Training Specialist, Dentons) and Caitlin Hunter (Reference Librarian, UCLA Law Library).
